Sonic the Hedgehog and Pac-Man have embraced their inner bromance with news that the duo will be appearing in each other’s games for mobile platforms over the next month.

This means that Pac-Man and his other half will be hitting up Sonic Dash, while Sega’s spiky mascot will be rocking up in the classic Pac-Man on iOS and Android. It’s a timely announcement too, as Sonic Dash has just turned five-years-old.

The promotional crossover will run from February 20 – March 20, and features an app that results in each guest popping up in the other’s game as a playable character, plus a host of other extra bits and bobs thrown in for good measure.

There’s even a barmy back story to justify the crossover, other than it being just a damn great idea.

Apparently, Dr. Robotnick Eggman is a bit miffed that he’s missed out on Sonic Dash’s birthday bash, and as such teams up with Bash the Ghost to unleash mayhem in the game, prompting Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man to put a stop to his evil doings. You do this by racing to the finish line, gobbling Power Pellets along the way and also facing off against Bash in a boss fight.

Concurrently, Eggman has captured a bunch of Sonic’s animal chums and plonked them into a maze, resulting in Sonic having to travel to Pac-Man’s world to save them. Here, the Blue Blur will dash around a new maze designed around Green Hill Zone while hoovering up rings and speeding through Moto Bugs.

‘We’re excited to host PAC-MAN and Ms. PAC-MAN in Sonic Dash in celebration of the game’s five year anniversary,’ commented SEGA HARDlight boss, Chris Southall. ‘We know fans will be delighted with the result, a special event that brings two iconic video game universes together for the very first time on mobile in a speed-packed experience.’

The press blurb also mentions that you can permanently unlock the new Sonic Maze for Pac-Man up until March 20, while nabbing enough of Pac-Man’s bells, fruits, and keys will permanently unlock those characters for future use.Â
