“nProtect is a cheap, extremely invasive anti-cheat,” and Helldivers 2 may be better off without it

Online multiplayer games, especially those in the shooter genre, are often susceptible to cheaters and hackers. For this reason, Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead Game Studios employs the nProtect GameGuard anti-cheat to combat these exploits. Unfortunately, based on a few recent player complaints, nProtect seems to do more harm than good, as the anti-cheat continues to negatively impact in-game performance.

“Hell, I wouldn’t be shocked if the reason the performance is all over the damn place is [because of] that damn anti-cheat,” one frustrated user claimed in a Reddit post. They then pointed out that nProtect doesn’t actually prevent others from hacking since they’ve seen players use game-breaking glitches, like infinite sentries, and unreleased stratagems, such as the deployable Defense Wall.

And, since Helldivers 2 is a PvE game, hackers can’t do much to ruin the experience for others (though High Command might beg to differ). Plus, as the host of a mission, you can kick any would-be hackers as soon as you see them using exploits. However, user TheMilliner did point out that the Helldivers 2 anti-cheat isn’t actually being used “to protect [players] from cheaters.” “It’s to protect the cash shop, which is a little dumb since you can just earn everything over time, and it’s serverside,” they continued.

Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that Arrowhead Game Studios will remove or even replace the game’s anti-cheat system at this point, especially with plenty of other issues to address in the short term. But with the devs set to return from their “summer break” soon, they could end up addressing these nProtect GameGuard complaints.
