EA will not release a new Need For Speed title this year, instead offering Ghost Games an “extended development window” to build a major new title for 2015.
CEO Andrew Wilson explained the decision to skip a release during EA’s Q4 earnings call last night, stating: “We also decided not to ship Need for Speed game in FY15. Ghost Games in Gothenburg is working on an innovative new chapter of the storied franchise, and we’ve planned an extended development window to ensure we’re delivering a high-quality experience for Need for Speed players next year.”
The extended cycle means that 2014 will be the first year EA has skipped a Need For Speed release since 2001.
“We are already deep in development on our next game and want to make this promise to you: we will listen to you,” added Ghost’s general manager Marcus Nilsson on the series official website. “We’re going to give you the game you’ve been asking for. It will be the game you deserve, but to do that will take us some time.
“We’ve made the decision to not release a Need for Speed in 2014, so we can work towards a highly innovative Need for Speed in 2015. An experience built on a foundation we know you’ll greatly look forward to.”
Many Need For Speed fans have been calling for EA to revisit the Underground universe. Could next year’s game be Need For Speed: Underground 3?
But even without a new Need For Speed, racing fans still have plenty to look forward to later this year with The Crew, Driveclub and Project CARS all due to launch between September and November.
