The Super Smash Bros dating app SmashTogether has been unceremoniously taken down by Nintendo via a good ol’ fashioned Cease and Desist takedown. The unofficial app which is described as a “premium dating app for smashers” has been smashed into the ground with a legal wombo combo.
SmashTogether gets smashed
Announced in 2024, SmashTogether was designed to be a “premium dating site for Super Smash Bros enjoyers of all kinds”. The unofficial app would allow players to meet their “dream Doubles partner” via a “robust matchmaking algorithm” to connect with their ideal Smash Bros lover.
Dating profiles would not only have a potential match’s name, age, location and gender, but also their notable wins against other Smash Bros players. Additionally, their “About Me” section would likely involve what they’re looking for in a potential lover/Smash Bros player.
The dating app was set to go into open beta on May 15, 2025… that’s today. Unfortunately, for Smash Bros players who want an extremely small dating pool, Nintendo immediately whipped out its usual legal takedown notice and kicked the app right out of the stage.
In a very small notice on Twitter, the SmashTogether team confirmed that they “got cease & desisted” with a picture of Yoshi sitting on top of Peach’s castle from the Super Mario 64 DS mini-game, Loves Me…? So sad, so sad.
Of course, the app’s takedown was immediately meme’d by Smash players and non-Smash players alike. “My one chance at true love, ruined by Nintendo’s protectionism of their intellectual property,” one user responded.
On the other side, some users explained that the platform would’ve had more success if the app was focused on the entire fighting game community. “Now is your chance to make it FGC themed and expand 10x,” one gamer said.
I mean, I don’t even know what to say. No offence, fighting game fans, but if there was any dating app to avoid—this would be it. I mean, who wants to date a Virtua Fighter player, am I right, guys? That or an anime-fan dating app. That probably exists, right?
