To mark the 20th anniversary of the Pokemon series, Nintendo will be launching a new mobile game called Pokemon GO in 2016 for iOS and Android devices.
The game will use augmented reality to allow players to capture Pokemon in the real world. Players can trade, battle and work together to complete events, like taking on a Legendary Pokemon.
The game is being developed by Niantic, and will feature in-app purchases.
“Our challenge was to develop a great game for smart phone devices that expressed the core values of Pokémon,” said Tsunekazu Ishihara, president and CEO of The Pokémon Company. “Pokémon GO is the answer to that challenge.”
“Pokémon GO is a wonderful combination of Niantic’s real world gaming platform and one of the most beloved franchises in popular culture,” said John Hanke, founder and CEO of Niantic, Inc. “Our partnership with The Pokémon Company and Nintendo is an exciting step forward in real-world gaming and using technology to help players discover the world and people around them.”
A wearable accessory will also launch with the game, called Pokemon GO Plus, which can be synced with phones via bluetooth. This watch-like device will feature a button which can be pressed to allow players to catch Pokemon even when away from their phones.
