Ninja Theory has announced Hellblade, a “brutal” new title based on Celtic mythology currently in development for PlayStation 4.

Described by the developer as an “independent AAA” title, Ninja Theory intends for Hellblade to deliver blockbuster production values in an indie game, and tells players to expect a twisted world with “brutal, uncompromising combat”.

“We are embracing the creative spirit that comes with independence without letting go of the stunning production values that we are known for,” wrote the developer. “It’s not indie, it’s not AAA. This is a third way. It’s independent AAA.”

“It’s about making a more focused game experience that isn’t trying to be all things to all people but satisfies a particular gaming itch. It’s about being in command of our creativity so that we can give you what you want from us at a lower price.”

Ninja Theory adds that Hellblade is still very early in production, with the trailer above offering fans “a taste of the AAA quality” that the studio plans to deliver.

Hellblade’s announcement follows the reveal of Razer earlier today, a canned next-gen title that would have seen players joining together to battle a monster that has taken over the planet.

Additional formats besides PS4 have yet to be announced.
