A new PlayStation 5 system update is finally bringing back the awesome classic console themes released for the brand’s 30th anniversary earlier this year. After the 30th anniversary celebration, Sony took the classic themes away, but they’re finally back alongside other new additions.
New PS5 system update brings back themes
Announced in a PlayStation Blog post, the new PS5 system update will release on April 24, 2025. Alongsde the returning themes that allow players to have their system replicate the sounds and themes of PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4, the new system update focuses on audio improvements.
“Due to the overwhelmingly positive response from our community, we’re happy to bring back the look and feel of the four console designs for players to customize the home screen on PS5,” PlayStation announced.
The returning themes can be found in a new section of the System menu after the PS5 system update is installed. In the menu, players will be able to set which console they would like their system to sound like. While not confirmed, this hopefully opens the doors for more unique themes in the future.
Additionally, PlayStation is adding a brand-new Audio Focus option to the console in the next update.
“When the audio focus setting is turned on, you can choose from a range of preset options which makes it easier to distinguish sounds like in-game character dialogue, subtle sound effects such as footsteps and rustling grass, as well as voices in party chats for a more immersive gaming experience,” the company announced.
On release, the new Audio Focus feature will have the following options:
- Boost Low Pitch: Amplify low-frequency sounds like roaring engines and rumbling noises.
- Boost Voices: Amplify voice chats, character voices, and other middle-frequency sounds.
- Boost High Pitch: Amplify high-frequency sounds like footsteps and metallic noises.
- Boost Quiet Sounds: Amplify low-volume sounds in a wide range of frequencies.
Players will also be able to select the level of support for the new feature with three levels: Weak, Medium and Strong. Additionally, the new PS5 system update will allow players to choose the level of support across the left and right channels of headphones connected via USB or a 3.5mm audio jack.
Unfortunately, this feature is not available to use for HDMI connections via a TV set, AV receivers or soundbars.
