It appears as though Daedalic Entertainment might be getting another crack at the Lord of the Rings whip, following the uncovering of a government database listing in Germany.

First spotted by Gameswirtschaft.de, the listing on the website for the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action of Germany (or BMWK for short) reveals that Daedalic is working on an LOTR project for which it’s receiving funding for between June 2022 to August of 2024. It even has a description, which translates to the following (via Google Translate).

“Daedalic is working on a new project that will take the player into a lush world full of mythical beings and spells. It tells a story from the perspective of a character that has never been told before. The player discovers completely new regions and influences the events of the world within the scope of his role and abilities. In his own way, he is trying to influence the course of events and change the fate of the world. This project is aimed at avid fans of the fantasy story and 3D action-adventure genres around the world.”

The news comes as something of a surprise, following the poor reception of this week’s release of The Lord of the Rings Gollum. The game has released to less-than-stellar reviews, with much attention being brought to the game’s apparent visual downgrade from the pre-release material.

Nevertheless, other devs have been very supportive of Daedalic in the wake of the furore around the game – for example Sony Santa Monica’s Dannie Carlone who wrote “Games are hard to make. Regardless of the score, every project has positives/lessons learned,” on Twitter. “Some things are out of your hands. Be kind to each other.”

Of course, it’s also worth noting that the start date of the funding is almost a full year before the reviews of Gollum were known – but also it’s a nice thought that Daedalic might get another opportunity to learn from its mistakes and improve on where it tripped up with Lord of the Rings Gollum. Only time will tell. Elsewhere, the makers of New World have announced they’re working on a brand new Lord of the Rings MMO.
