A new big-budget Lord of the Rings game will reportedly be announced soon, and it’s claimed that the game aims to “compete with Hogwarts Legacy”. The history of The Lord of the Rings games is very mixed. There have been highs such as the excellent Two Towers and Return of the King movie tie-in games from Electronic Arts, as well as the underrated War of the North and the Star Wars Battlefront rip-off, Lord of the Rings Conquest. On the flip side, there have been disasters such as the abhorrent Gollum which was so bad the devs even apologised to players for the “underwhelming experience”. Now it’s claimed that a big-budget experience is secretly in-development and will be made official soon.
New big-budget Lord of the Rings game aims to “compete with Hogwarts Legacy”
Insider Gaming reported an exclusive about a new Lord of the Rings game in development. According to Mike Straw, sources close to the game have told Insider Gaming that it is an entirely new title that will, at least partially, be funded by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO). This funding will equate to $100 million, give or take.
In addition to the above, Insider Gaming reports “The deal has been in the works since last year, and, while not signed yet due to the number of moving parts, is said to be made official ‘soon’ and could happen as early as next week,” presumably meaning October 6th to 12th. Lastly, “Regarding current funding of the game’s development, it has been funded internally”.
Aside from Abu Dhabi investment, it’s believed that multiple parties are involved with the game’s production, including Embracer, Revenge, and other unnamed studios. Embracer and Revenge both declined to comment when reached out to by Insider Gaming.
Now for the most exciting part, while specific details about the game haven’t been shared, it’s reportedly a third-person action game that is designed to “compete with Hogwarts Legacy”. There’s no elaboration on this statement, but, looking at what Hogwarts Legacy is, it perhaps means we are getting an open-world Lord of the Rings single-player third-person action game where you get to create your own character. Fingers crossed!
Remember that this is only a rumor as of writing. As for what’s officially cooking for Lord of the Rings, Amazon is working on an MMO. Amazon’s Lord of the Rings MMO was originally announced in 2018, but it was cancelled in 2021 due to disputes with Tencent. Amazon then announced a new LotR MMO that they are working on back in 2023.
