The new Call of Duty 2023 title, which was recently revealed as a standalone release, was initially thought by many to be a continuation of the Modern Warfare series. However, official reports have now surfaced stating that the upcoming title will not be Modern Warfare 3 and will instead be a continuation of the current MW2 entry.

According to an article by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Activision’s goal for the new CoD game will be to make it a “standalone, full-price release and also an extension of Modern Warfare 2.” Apparently, the upcoming title will be “carrying over maps and modes from last year’s shooter,” but that this isn’t set in stone yet since there’s still plenty of time before its Q4 release.

Sledgehammer Games, the studio who last created 2021’s Call of Duty: Vanguard, will be leading the charge in developing the as yet unnamed 2023 CoD installment. Players are looking forward to seeing a new studio handle the creation of the latest entry, seeing as how MW2 has often been plagued with numerous bugs that are still yet to be addressed to this day.

However, the news that the game will be a “full-price release” is obviously not a welcome notion since fans have already spent a ton of money in purchasing MW2 and the cosmetics within. Users on Reddit are already calling on others to boycott the forthcoming game by simply not buying it. In fact, most players are furious at the announcement of the new entry after the glaring lack of content that MW2 brought to the table.

For now, only time will tell if the community can indeed heed the call to boycott the franchise. However, based on the overall sales performance of MW2, it doesn’t seem like players are going to stop purchasing new CoD installments any time soon.
