Netflix’s The Witcher has cast a character from the book series who is extremely spoilery, so turn back now if you don’t want the books nor the show spoiled!
Redanian Intelligence, a centre for all Witchery content, knew that Viola Prettejohn had been brought onto the adaptation but her role was a mystery. Now, the site has stumbled across her Spotlight CV that says she will play Fake Ciri.
Well, who’s Fake Ciri when she’s at home? She is a young Cintra girl of noble birth who is orphaned in the First Northern War against Nilfgaard. Abandoned and vulnerable, she roams refugee shelters until she is apprehended by the antagonistic mage, Vilgefortz of Roggeveen. In Time of Contempt, he returns “Ciri” to Emperor Emhyr var Emreis so that the real Ciri’s powerful and arcane Elder Bloodline could be used to apocalyptic ends. Fake Ciri acts as the Emperor’s daughter for appearance’s sake, even though Emhyr is well aware that she’s not his daughter.
Prettejohn’s role means that the events of this book will likely feature in the series. The first season will follow the story of Blood of Elves which is the first book in the series, and where actors Henry Cavill and Freya Allan have taken inspiration for their performances. Time of Contempt is the second book, and so it’s possible that the Blood of Elves plotline interweaves with the beginning of Time of Contempt in the show. The adaptation has recently gotten its second season greenlit, and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said she’s planned seven whole seasons for The Witcher.
Intriguing. Whether we’ll catch a glimpse of Fake Ciri in a Cintra court, or we’ll see her story unfold in the midst of war remains to be seen. But not for much longer! Netflix’s The Witcher will hit the small screen on December 20.
