Netflix’s The Witcher has got the green light for a second season, and well before the first season has even hit the streaming service.

Blimey. The production team has put their all into The Witcher, and as a result, it won’t be the ‘poor cousin of Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones.’ The show will emphasise the darkness and the terror of the Continent through impressive practical and visual effects, to ensure viewers believe in the world of The Witcher and the stories told within it. ‘Yes there are monsters, and yes, there will be a lot of blood – but there’s also a family coming together,’ showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said. ‘To me, that really has been the theme of the first season: “What makes a family? How does a family find each other? Why are they meant to be together?” People who may not think they are fantasy fans will come and find that they are.’
Hissrich is keen for an extra season or three as she’s planned out seven seasons with a narrative that will ‘capture audiences for years.’ Excitingly, she’s got her wish. Variety confirmed that Netflix’s The Witcher will be getting a second season over a month before the first season comes to the small-screen. The standard eight episodes will begin filming in London in early 2020 with a view to premiere in 2021. Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra, and Freya Allan will all reprise their roles as Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri, expectedly.
I’m so thrilled to announce: Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri will be back for more adventures… in Season Two.
I could not be more proud of what the amazing cast and crew of The Witcher have accomplished, and can’t wait for the world to dig in and enjoy these stories with us. ❤️âš”ï¸ pic.twitter.com/evWoHvUl1e

The showrunner is ‘thrilled’ that a second season is on the cards, and expressed her joy in a separate tweet. ‘I could not be more proud of what the amazing cast and crew of The Witcher have accomplished, and can’t wait for the world to dig in and enjoy these stories with us,’ she said. Also, it’s just hit me how cool the second season image is. It’s Geralt’s silver and steel swords laid out like the Roman numeral for two. I really enjoy that.
Netflix’s The Witcher will release on December 20.
