EA has announced Need for Speed Rivals, a brand new entry in the series that's due for release on Xbox One, PS4, PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. Current-gen versions arrive on November 19, with next-gen due later this year. A Wii U version was not announced.

Rivals is in development at EA's new Ghost Games in partnership with Criterion Games, and makes use of the new Frostbite 3 engine that's powering Battlefield 4 and other EA projects.

Players will be able to play as racers or cops, with each side of the law having its own set of challenges, rewards, and consequences. The game will see the return of Ferrari to the Need for Speed franchise, with players able to drive numerous vehicles including the F12berlinetta.

A new AllDrive feature is said to let players seamlessly transition from playing alone to with friends.

"The Need for Speed franchise has been an industry leader bringing social competition to the forefront in games," said Marcus Nilsson, Executive Producer, Ghosts Games. "For the first time, players will have the freedom to seamlessly go from single player to co-op to multiplayer. In Need for Speed Rivals we are creating one game experience with one progression, where the freedom to play with friends is more fluid and accessible than ever before."
