Speaking to TeamXbox, Radical Entertainment executive producer Tim Bennison has revealed why the decision was made to cut multiplayer gameplay from the open-world action title Prototype.

“From its inception Prototype was planned first and foremost as a single player open-world/action game. Naturally, with Alex’s genetically mutated shape-shifting abilities, we started to explore what would happen if he were to sub-divide into two Prototypes and what kind of multiplayer gameplay we could create around that concept,” explained Bennison. “We’ve been looking at this potential multiplayer idea much more closely as Prototype’s development has been progressing, and while it’s a great concept and gameplay bonus, our conclusion is that we won’t be able to pull it off with the same level of quality and polish that we’re aiming for with the original single player story.”

If you’re desperate to see multiplayer in Prototype then it looks like you’ll have to make sure you buy the first game, with a possibility that multiplayer could arrive at a later date via DLC.

“Post launch downloadable content is something we’re currently evaluating for Prototype from many different angles including multiplayer content such as co-op. Obviously we’re hoping that Prototype does well at retail and supports DLC and a sequel because we have a lot of creative room left to explore,” said Bennison.

If not by DLC multiplayer is expected to be a feature in a sequel, but Bennison notes that this will only happen if the first game does “well enough at retail”.

Prototype is currently scheduled for release later this year for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
