Mortal Kombat for Xbox 360 and PS3 will include a redeemable code for online play, Joystiq reports.
A retail tipster contacted the site, claiming that Warner has been trying to keep the information secret, and that it won’t even be detailed on the game’s packaging. Players without a code will have access to a two-day trial of online play.
“Mortal Kombat, available on April 19 for the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, includes a one-time-use registration code that gives players access to all online modes in the game,” read the retailer email. “Players who do not have a code will get a free two-day trial of the online play and then be able to purchase the online modes for 800 Microsoft Points on Xbox LIVE Marketplace and $9.99 on the PlayStation Network.”
If true, Warner’s implementation of the Online Pass could run through its future titles, including FEAR 3.
Warner is far from being alone in trying to discourage pre-owned sales. EA and THQ have both used an Online Pass code for online play, while other publishers have used a redeemable code to offer bonuses for pre-orders and non-second-hand purchases.
