Over three million copies of NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat are in the hands of gamers worldwide, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced.

The latest instalment in the fighting franchise hit stores in April this year and has gone on to sell (sold through to consumers) over three million in the months that followed. This makes Mortal Kombat the highest-selling fighting game this year, according to Warner.

“All of us at NetherRealm Studios are very excited that players have embraced Mortal Kombat. The game was a labour of love for us and we could not be more pleased with its performance,” said Ed Boon, creative director, NetherRealm Studios. “Fan reaction to this latest instalment has made all of our hard work worth it.”

The game’s available now on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
