According to Strategy Analytics, a global research and consulting company, the three big console manufacturers will sell almost 200 million consoles between them by the year 2012.

The report titled “Games Consoles For The Digital Home: Assessing The Prospects For PS3, Xbox 360 And Revolution“, states that the Xbox 360 will pose a serious threat to Sony and their PlayStation 3, leading sales in North American and Europe into 2007. The PlayStation 3 isn’t due to be launched until mid to late 2006, so this would explain Microsoft’s early predicted lead.

The reports goes on to say that the PlayStation 3 will eventually pull ahead of the Xbox 360, assuming that the technology in the console meets its potential and Sony can offer an online experience that rivals Microsoft’s.

The Xbox 360 represents one of Microsoft’s best hopes of controlling the digital home,” notes David Mercer, Principal Analyst at Strategy Analytics. “The 2005 holiday season will be a make-or-break time not only for the Xbox 360, but also for Microsoft’s wider digital home strategy.”

Overall predicted sales figures put Sony in a clear lead, selling 121.8 million, with the Xbox 360 expected to reach 58.8 million, and the Nintendo Revolution hitting 18 million. Nothing too unexpected then, but we’ll have to wait and see if Sony can really continue their dominance in the videogame industry. The war starts this Christmas, with the release of the Xbox 360, followed next year by the PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo Revolution.
