Fable II lead designer Peter Molyneux has refused to confirm whether the much exploited Fable II Pub Games glitch was deliberately put into the game.
As noticed by Wired, in the Fable II Pub Games Fortune’s Tower card game, players were able to bet the lowest amount before cards were dealt and then immediately hit the left bumper after selecting deal. This maxed out the bet but risked only the initial low stake.
The glitch, since patched by Microsoft-owned developer Lionhead Studios, allowed players to rack up insane amounts of gold. The idea is that the gold earned in Fable II Pub Games will be transferred over for use in the Xbox 360 exclusive Fable II, due out on October 24.
In a Fable II preview over at IGN, the website said: “Just be warned. Molyneux has said that they are well aware of the cheat and that those who used it to earn their money will be in for a surprise.”
This led to a number of websites reporting that the Pub Games glitch was intentional.
In an interview with VideoGamer.com, the first part of which can be found here, Molyneux refused to confirm whether the glitch was intentional, or what the surprise for gamers who exploited the glitch will be.
Here’s a snippet from the interview:
VideoGamer.com: I wanted to ask you about the Pub Games Glitch. It was reported that it was deliberate. Was it?
Peter Molyneux: I am not really going to say anything to that. All I’m going to say is one of the tenants of Fable was to look at who you really are. I’ve always said in interviews how do we judge if you’re good or evil? We do that by putting temptations in front of you. A word of warning. Don’t expect to get off completely Scott free.
VideoGamer.com: You’ve suggested there’s going to be a surprise for people who have exploited the glitch. What will that be exactly?
Peter Molyneux: I’d love to tell you about it but we would spoil the surprise. All I’m going to say is: every choice, a consequence. If you took the choice to cheat you’re going to have to pay the consequences.
So there you have it. With Fable II out in exactly a month, you don’t have long to learn your fate if you’ve been a dirty little cheater. While you wait, why not check out Tom’s hands-on preview?
