Molyneux was speaking to an audience of peers as part of The Industry Speaks: The Future of Entertainment. He first noted the importance of emotion, and how it will play a large part in Fable 2. “The big feature is the emotions that I want to you to feel. And for me, that is where the revolution comes,” said Molyneux.
“We have felt the emotion of killing and maiming and the emotions of power. But we need more complex and interesting emotions. That is where real innovation is going to come from.“
He also added that online play has huge potential, not only to bring gamers together, but to open up gaming to a world of untapped people. Molyneux accepted that World of Warcraft is a great thing, but feels it only works for geeks like himself.
“I sat in my underpants until four in the morning playing that game for about six months and I realised I was one of the millions of people doing that. But that’s not really innovation. That only works for geeks like me,” said Molyneux. “My passion is to introduce everyone to what online games are.“
It’s not all about emotions and online play though; Molyneux also stated that games need to offer a deep experience in order to appeal to those beyond the established audience. “We need more compulsive concepts,” he said. “We need less games about zombies and aliens, less games about huge guns, and that will help us reach out to more people. We need unbelievably deep games.“
Very little is known about Fable 2, but if it turns out anything like Molyneux’s ideas then it could be something very special.
