Modern Warfare 2 is hosting another free access weekend from June 22 to 26, but some fans have noticed that the timing is highly suspicious due to the fact that it coincides with XDefiant’s Open Beta period.

Towards the beginning of June, Ubisoft had announced during their showcase that an Open Beta phase for their upcoming FPS entry would be taking place from June 21 to 23. A few days later, however, Activision surprisingly revealed that they would be making MW2 free-to-play during this time, which made XDefiant fans furious as this was seen by some as a desperate ploy to attract players away from the competition.

Now, this isn’t the first time that Modern Warfare 2 has held a free access weekend as they’d previously conducted similar promos back in the beginning of 2023. But, it is worth noting that Call of Duty’s April free-to-play event also clashed with the XDefiant closed beta that was being held during the same period so many are now claiming that this might just be more than a coincidence at this point.

One user commenting under a particular post on the XDefiant subreddit simply said “CoD is [getting] really desperate” and that they’re “not gonna play that sh*t.” Another user then pointed out the same sentiment mentioned above after noting that “they did this last time too.” “They know they have the possibility of some serious competition,” they continued.

Whether Activision did this on purpose or not remains to be seen as the publisher is yet to address these claims by the community. Based on the eerie timing and the large number of player reactions, though, it seems that fans are starting to suspect the Modern Warfare 2 team of foul play that might just end up turning some people off from the CoD series entirely.
