In the latest Iwata Asks feature on Wii.com, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed that the next iconic Nintendo character could be the Wii Sports Resort island.

“… one part of Nintendo’s business has been creating a whole host of characters which we have then licensed out,” said Miyamoto. “But I’ve always thought, seeing as we are a games company, that in addition to characters resembling people, why couldn’t we also turn the actual stages of games into characters?”

Miyamoto added that the idea of turning a stage into a character has been kicking around for some time, but it wasn’t until Wii Sports Resort’s Wuhu Island that the idea became a reality.

“We really polished up the island, turned it into a resort and actually made the location into a kind of character,” said Miyamoto. “This will then lead to a range of island series…”

He revealed that you could have adventure, RPG and city-building games, noting “it will be fun to see all the ideas that we can come up with”.
