Mojang Studios has announced Minecraft Legends as a new action strategy spin-off from the enormously popular block-building series.

Rather than a traditional RTS, the game’s taking a more action-focused approach to things. You’ll control a singular character, exploring the Overworld and attempting to stop the Piglins. They’re after taking over with their Nether corruption, you see, and according to legend only you can stop them succeeding.

Of course, there’ll be plenty of familiar mobs from Minecraft, and you’ll be taking on hordes of equally-familiar enemies. You’ll direct your forces in a style that seems similar to 2009 Double Fine title Brutal Legend, as you direct armies of Villagers, Creepers, Skeletons and much, much more. There’ll also be campaign co-op and competitive multiplayer modes too.

While it’s keeping further specifics under wraps, an initial trailer shows us some of what we can expect. We spot a couple of helpful fairy-looking friends who’ll help you build important structures, and you’ll be getting your own hands dirty destroying nether portals as well as in combat. Mojang’s teamed up with strategy experts Blackbird Interactive for the game, who’ve worked on Hardspace: Shipbreaker and Crossfire: Legion.

We’re told to expect more info in the coming months. For now, you can check out the trailer for yourself down below. Minecraft Legends aims to launch on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC in 2023.
