One of the many subtle surprises from the Microsoft conference was the announcement that Minecraft multiplayer will soon be possible across multiple platforms. The Better Together update was announced during the conference, but was given less emphasis than it perhaps deserved.

It soon won’t matter which platform your friends use to play Minecraft, and every version will be the same in terms of DLC and updates, ensuring that everyone is able to create new worlds together.

‘Anyone playing the game on Windows 10, iOS, Android, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and VR devices will be able to play online together,’ Mojang said. ‘If you own Minecraft for your mobile or VR device, you’ll get this as a free update this summer. If you own Minecraft: Xbox One Edition or Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition, you’ll receive the brand new version of Minecraft for free, and your existing worlds and DLC will come along to the new version with you.’

The platforms mentioned were the Xbox One console family, PC and even the Nintendo Switch. Where was the PlayStation 4 mention you wonder?

Well it seems that is not happening, and Sony were the ones who refused to be a part of the gaming get together. This is all according to Windows Central blogger Jez Corden on Twitter.

There are many reasons to speculate why, and the conspiracy theorists can crack on with that. Microsoft avoided questions on the matter stating that, ‘our goal is always to bring every Minecraft player together’.

Sony have yet to make an official statement on this, so I suppose more as it develops.
