In an update on the official website, Monolith has clarified that the charity DLC for Middle-earth Shadow of War — previously available for players to buy, with the majority of the price going to the family of an executive producer who had passed away last year — will now be available for free to all players.

A few weeks ago it was announced that Middle-earth: Shadow of War would be getting a DLC made in memory of Michael Forgey, in order to raise funds to support Forgey’s widow and children. Forgey would be immortalised in the game as Forthog Orc-Slayer.

The issue became confused, however: the donation was not promoted outside the USA, and small print seemed to exclude certain states in the USA too. There was also a tweet, which is described in the post as ‘factually incorrect’ which suggested international profits would not be going to Forgey’s family. To cut through the confusion, the DLC is now free for anyone who purchases the full game.

‘We now recognize that tying our donation to sales of the DLC was not the best way to achieve our goal of offering financial support to the family and creating a lasting memorial to Michael Forgey,’ says the update. ‘We sincerely apologize to the fans and to the Forgey family for the confusion we created.’

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will be making a donation directly to Forgey’s family in leiu of funds from the DLC. If you’d already bought the DLC, you’ll be getting a full refund, but you can donate directly to the Forgey family if you wish to.
