Ryse, which was trailered at E3 2011 having originally been announced under the title Codename Kingdoms at E3 2010, isn’t at E3 2012 because Microsoft doesn’t believe it’s in a state to publicly show off.

“We’re just not at a point right now to show the game, and instead of … we’re still working with Crytek, we’re still extremely committed to the relationship, but we want to make sure that we’re putting our best foot forward every time we show the game,” Phil Spencer, corporate VP of Microsoft Studios, told Joystiq. “You’ll see more about that game, no doubt.”

What is in doubt is just how essential Kinect will be to the experience, with Spencer adding that “Kinect will be part of the game, absolutely.”

Core gamers will be hoping Ryse opts for optional, seated Kinect functionality, rather than a full-blown athletic affair with arms and legs going in all directions.
