Microsoft has issued a statement confirming that despite Activision’s acquisition of Bizarre Creations, the Project Gotham Racing franchise will live on.
“Project Gotham Racing is a signature racing franchise for Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE and we plan to continue the series but we have nothing further to announce,” said Microsoft.
Following yesterday’s announcement that Activision had acquired Bizarre Creations, understandably the Bizarre forums were full of concerned gamers wanting to know what was happening to their favourite racing game series. A member of the Bizarre team confirmed what we all thought – they would no longer be working on the PGR series.
“… we’ve done 4 PGR games now (5 if you include MSR), and there always comes a time when you feel you’ve personally achieved as much as you can with a franchise, without letting the fans of the series down by doing yet another yourselves. This could be after 2 games (as we did with Formula 1), it could be after 10 – but in this case it was 4.
“We made the decision not to continue because we know it would probably be in the best interests of the PGR series, given how hard the team have worked on all the games over the years. And because we know that should MS decide to take it forward, a fresh new team could probably do it great justice now,” said the Bizarre Creations staff member.
The two Bizzare Creations development teams are now to begin work on two new titles for Activision: a racing game and a character game. The first of these titles is scheduled for release after Activision’s 2009 financial year.
