2K Sports has revealed that Michael Jordan is the cover star NBA 2K23, and not just one cover but two: the Championship Edition and the Michael Jordan Edition. The game is out on September 9th, on consoles and PC.

This is not the first time that Michael Jordan has been the cover star for an NBA game. He already featured on the covers for NBA 2K11, NBA 2K12, and NBA 2K16. Still, not that he’s unwelcome; why wouldn’t you get His Airness on the box if you could? It’s not like it would dent sales.

2K has said that it will announce two more NBA athletes for NBA 2K23 over the next couple of days. And pricing on the various editions has yet to be revealed, as well. For NBA 2K12, there were three covers available: one depicting Jordan, one awash with Earvin “Magic” Johnson mid-baby hook, and one featuring Larry Bird, gripped in the syrupy hiatus of a fadeaway jump shot.

If you’re interested in NBA 2K, you may wish to parse my rambling on the subject. I play it more than I play any other game. In a feature on the ups and downs of this long-running dynasty of a series, I said:

“As an annual purchaser and player of NBA 2K, I am in a strange position: that of the continually, and mostly happily, conned. The series has a monopoly. Any impulses toward progression, in the formula of play, occur with the slow, unchallenged languor of a champion.”

NBA 2K23 is out on September 9th, on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch and PC. Check out the trailer below:
