Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid was one of the most beloved gaming franchises of all time, but the younger generation haven’t had much experience with the series. With Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater scheduled to arrive this year, Konami has revealed why its remaking the brilliant PlayStation 2 game.

In an interview with Play Magazine, producer Noriaki Okamura explained that younger gamers have little experience with Metal Gear Solid. While Solid Snake has been present in games such as Fortnite and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the game series has been essential dormant for a decade since the release of The Phantom Pain. Oh, and Metal Gear Survive.

The youths don’t know Metal Gear

In the interview with the magazine, via GamesRadar, Okamura explained that many younger gamers have been unable to play Metal Gear at its peak. With this in mind, Konami wanted to bring the series back with a AAA finish.

“One of the things that really sparked us to do the remake in general is because we realised that a lot of the newer, younger generation of gamers aren’t familiar with the Metal Gear series anymore”, Okamura said. “After all, we leave behind much more than just DNA, as Solid Snake would say—but again, who is Solid Snake?”

Many longtime fans of Metal Gear Solid have been confused by Konami’s decision to remake Snake Eater instead of any other entry in the series. As the earliest chronological point of the original MGS story, it was the perfect entry point for new fans.

“That’s where the original story started”, Okamura put simply.

Nevertheless, there have been calls for Konami to remake the original Metal Gear Solid with a full reimagining of its gameplay. However, the studio has expressed massive fear of remaking the original title, especially without Kojima’s inclusion.
