Metal Gear Solid creator and legendary game designer Hideo Kojima wants his games to be appreciated by aliens in hundreds of years time. In an interview, which was cited by Fandom Wire among others, the veteran Death Stranding figurehead explained that just like any other art form, games live on generations after their creators pass away.
Aliens should like Hideo Kojima
In the interview, Kojima explained that he strives to make works that will exist outside of the contemporary era.
“For starters, the way art is evaluated changes with the times,” the Metal Gear Solid creator said. “Just as paintings are appraised 100 or 200 years after the artist’s death, games and films also remain as objects to be passed down through generations after their creators pass away. If I make something I’m satisfied with, centuries later, aliens may come and say, ‘That’s awesome.’ I think that’s what it means to leave something behind.”
Kojima recently revealed that his next project is a sequel to Death Stranding, dubbed Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. The original certainly divided fans on launch, but we loved it – awarding it a solid 8/10 in our review. The eccentric developer’s sentiment isn’t at all surprising, after all, with every project he’s tackled, Kojima manages to show an extraordinary level of creativity. Death Stranding felt very much like a Kojima game – the vastness, the characters and of course, the now legendary inventory system.
Death Stranding, released in 2019, was a typical Kojima game – packed with creativity and memorable mechanics. Awarding it an 8/10 VideoGamer concluded: “Death Stranding is filled with things that must be seen, a sprawling, genre-spanning sci-fi adventure from a developer like no other. Its tackier clumps of writing and stunt casting seem overwrought, but its direction and its stars shine brightest.”
No doubt the great man will be keeping a close eye on Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, the upcoming remake of what many consider to be Kojima’s finest work. Konami haven’t involved Kojima at all during the process, but decided to keep his name in the credits, which is, of course, the right move. There’s still no release date yet for either Death Stranding 2 or Metal Gear Delta, although the latter is expected to land sometime early next year.
Whatever Kojima does, something tells us he’s already going to be remembered for generations to come – by humans and aliens alike. Here’s to many more years of his work.
