Edward McMillen, one of the designers behind indie sensation Super Meat Boy, has revealed his next project: a retro shooter with a Zelda-esque structure – The Binding of Isaac.

“Isaac is a roguelike shooter based on the dungeon structure of Zelda (nes).” writes McMillen on his blog. “At its core it controls like Smash TV / Robotron in a randomly generated semi RPG world filled with power-ups items and special abilities.”

Like Super Meat Boy, The Binding of Isaac will enlist the musical talents of Danny Baranowsky, who is in the process of laying down the beats for the game’s soundtrack.

“The game currently has 6 ‘dungeons’ spanning three chapters, six bosses, 36 enemy types, four unlockable characters and tons of dynamic happenings.”

The Binding of Isaac is pencilled in for an August launch, but as McMillen hopes to “top out at eight dungeons with 10+ bosses and 42 enemy types,” he admits the team has their work cut out.

The new Steam game will fall in the same month as two special editions of Super Meat Boy, which are coming to retail for the first time.
