It’s an exciting time for fans of Remedy. Although not the biggest financial hit, we finally got Alan Wake 2 last year and it was an amazing horror experience. While AW2 has come and gone, there’s plenty else to anticipate for the future including remakes of the beloved Max Payne series and a sequel to Control. The Max Payne remake is officially in “full production,” meanwhile, Control 2 has entered “production readiness”.

It was announced in 2022 that the Max Payne remake from Remedy was happening in partnership with Rockstar. It is only the first and second original games that are being remade, meaning there will not be a remake of the third installment that was developed by Rockstar. As for more Jesse Faden, it was also announced in 2022 that Control 2 is planned for PS5, Xbox, and PC.

Both games are still not coming out soon, but Remedy has provided updates on their development.

Max Payne remake enters “full production”

Remedy has just published their half-year financial report which tracks January to June 2024. It provides statistics about increased revenue, and, most interesting to fans, it provides updates on the Max Payne remake and Control 2.

Starting with Max Payne, the April to June highlights state “Max Payne 1&2 remake entered the full production stage”. This is an update from October 2023 where it entered “production readiness“.

Staying with Max Payne, Remedy CEO Tero Virtala has also reported that, in the second quarter of 2024, “Development fees increased from the comparison period due to higher development fees from Max Payne 1&2 remake”.

The final update provided on the upcoming remake is that “The development team has been working towards developing the game to an early functional state from beginning to end”. It’s also mentioned that Remedy cancelled a game codenamed Kestrel in May, which has “brought increased focus and better development synergies and enabled us to move experienced developers into other game projects”.

Control 2 enters “production readiness”

As for Control 2, it has moved into “production readiness” following on from “proof-of-concept” at the end of 2023. Below is an update on how the game’s development is progressing:

“The development team reached an important milestone in delivering a build of the game [Control 2] showcasing several important features in playable form. This has supported the ongoing business negotiations. The development team is working towards scaling up the production of the project.”

In addition to a sequel for Jesse Faden, Remedy is working on a Control multiplayer game codenamed Condor. This multiplayer experience has entered “full production,” and “The development team has worked on multiple maps and different mission types, and have organized a growing amount of internal and limited external playtesting for feature validation and feedback.”

Again, we still have a long time to wait for Max Payne and Control 2 to properly surface. The Max Payne remakes should come out before Control 2 seeing as it’s further into development, but it feels unlikely either one of them come out before 2026.
