Nintendo is looking to Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land and nintendogs + cats as the titles which will continue to sell well throughout the life of the Nintendo 3DS.

“It is important to create software that can sell for a long period of time, which is one of the characteristics of software for Nintendo platforms,” said Nintendo president Satoru Iwata in a half year financial results briefing. “Last year at this opportunity, I discussed the existence of software which had been selling for a long time, and those titles actually became the pillars of the year-end sales season last year.

“Once again, the existence of such titles is going to be important for the upcoming year-end sales season. For the Nintendo 3DS, among the software titles which we have already launched or the ones which are to hit the store shelves soon, such titles as nintendogs + cats, Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 hold strong potential to become the titles that will sell for as long as Nintendo 3DS is on the market.”

Iwata went on to detail how titles such as Super Mario 64 DS, nintendogs, Animal Crossing: Wild World, Mario Kart DS and New Super Mario Bros. sold the majority of their life-to-date units in the period following their first year on the market.

Evergreen titles were certainly a major driving force in the success of DS and Wii, so 3DS will need its own if the platform is to perform on a similar level.

The limited success of nintendogs + cats so far, resulting in the game being offered at a budget price at many retailers, is however not in keeping the sales curve of an evergreen title.
