Fortnite changed the landscape of its game when it joined hands with LEGO and introduced an entirely new Survival PvE game mode in December 2023. Ever since then, LEGO Fortnite has been its own different game within Fortnite that has received constant updates and new content with every season, making it a popular choice among young players.

But fans had hoped someday for a real-life collaboration between the two brands, which finally happened in October 2024 when LEGO launched four Fortnite sets based on popular characters and items from the game. These sets are now available worldwide and available for both kids and adults.

In a conversation with IGN, the Senior Design Manager of LEGO revealed why one of those sets was only made for adults.

“Age marking is decided according to build complexity”, reveals LEGO Fortnite designer on an 18+ set

Frédéric Roland Andre, Senior Design Manager at LEGO, spoke with IGN about designing sets based on a game and the future of the partnership between LEGO and Fortnite. During the conversation he revealed he worked on some of the iconic sets like LEGO Star Wars, Galaxy Squad, Nexo Knights, Ultra Agents, Ninjago, and more.

When asked about the choice of sets for Fortnite, Andre said, “Peely is very popular with the LEGO Fortnite community, so we chose to make a big version, specifically Peely Bone. The Supply Llama is also an iconic character in the LEGO Fortnite game, as is the Durrr Burger. Finally, we chose the Battle Bus as we knew it would make an appearance in the LEGO Fortnite game (it was added in August); plus, it presents a brilliant play or display design for fans.”

But when he was asked about the difference in age ratings of each set and specifically why one set, which is Peely Bone was 18+, Andre revealed that the age marking is decided according to the build complexity.

“Peely Bone is 18+ because we wanted it to be as highly detailed as possible and because its geometry is quite challenging (but don’t worry — the building instructions are great!). On the other hand, we wanted the Battle Bus to be a true toy that kids could play fully with”, added Andre.

To those unaware, Peely Bone is a snapshot of Peely but with half of its body made of bones and visible organs. The LEGO set based on the character contains sharp items and smaller pieces, hence the complexity of the build which is centered towards adults building the set.
