Gamasutra has got hold of additional sales data from data the NPD Group, giving a clearer picture of the successes and failures in 2008.
We all know about the games that have sold really well – Wii Play 5.28 million, GTA 4 5.22 million, CoD World at War 4.63 million units – but what of the games that didn’t shift millions of units.
According to NPD data, Sony’s LittleBigPlanet has now sold 611,000 units in the US, helped largely by a strong December which saw sales of 255,000 units. PS3 FPS Resistance 2 is also hovering around the same total, with 598,000 units shifted (Nov 385k, Dec 213k). And let’s not forget Metal Gear Solid 4. Released back in June the highly anticipated game raced to 775,000 units on its debut month and has now gone on to sell 1.076 million units – certainly very front heavy.
Gamasutra also managed to get hold of data for two of the holiday’s biggest third-party titles: Prince of Persia and Tomb Raider: Underworld. Ubisoft’s reboot of the Prince of Persia franchise was greeted with a mixed critical reception and while certainly no flop has only sold 483,000 units in the US since its release on December 2, 2008.
Eidos has already been pointing the finger at lower than expected Tomb Raider: Underworld sales in the US and it wasn’t kidding. The game which released on Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii back in November had sold only 246,000 units by the end of December.
