Baldur’s Gate 3 is an amazing RPG that put developer Larian Studios on the map for many gamers unfamiliar with the Divinity series. While fans would have loved a Baldur’s Gate 4, Larian Studios’ CEO, Swen Vincke, says one of the reasons the developer is returning to Divinity is because they “weren’t excited doing the D&D thing”.

Although developed by Larian, Baldur’s Gate 3 is part of the Dungeons & Dragons universe, owned by Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro. Meanwhile, Divinity is owned by Larian Studios, and it’s a series of games dating back to 2002, with Divine Divinity.

Speaking to Gamesradar, Vincke says the new Divinity revealed at The Game Awards 2025 has the studio “excited about what we’re making”. Vincke adds that this is a “step in the right direction, because [Larian] weren’t excited about what we were making back when we were doing the D&D thing”.

There’s no elaboration as to why Larian weren’t excited, and the lack of excitement isn’t evident in the final product, as Baldur’s Gate 3 was a huge success. It won The Game Awards 2023 Game of the Year, and it has sold over 20 million copies in two years.

In 2024, Vincke revealed that Larian nearly made Baldur’s Gate 4, but the decision not to was liberating. While Baldur’s Gate 3 has a huge following, Vincke describes developing the game as being inside a “little miserable cave”.

Since The Game Awards reveal, Larian has confirmed that the new Divinity is turn-based, similar to Baldur’s Gate 3. However, there has been backlash over Larian using generative AI for references while making concept art.

Larian is working on another game alongside Divinity, but there are currently no details about this mysterious second project besides it being an RPG.
