Speaking during an interview with Newsweek, Tai Yasue, co-director on Kingdom Hearts 3, has touched base on why the highly anticipated Disney-RPG has taken so long to arrive. Well, it has been 14 years since Kingdom Hearts 2 launched, after all.

Yasue-san revealed that the primary reason for the long wait is due to the fact Square Enix switched up the game engine.

'One of the main factors was the decision to switch the game engine to develop the game. Our current engine is great in terms of developing a high end AAA title, but because there was a change in technology and work flows, it took some time for the team to adapt and adjust,' he commented.

Elsewhere, Yasue also said that we shouldn't expect any surprise reveals in regards to the number of Disney-themed worlds appearing in Kingdom Hearts 3.

'We’re not planning on revealing any surprise Disney worlds, but these new properties gave us a chance to come up with a lot of new and fresh ideas, that there will certain be a lot of surprises with the gameplay.'

Kingdom Hearts 3 will finally launch for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on January 29, over five years since it was officially introduced at E3 2013. Development wrapped up in late November.

Sony has joined up with Square Enix to launch a special Kingdom Hearts 3 PS4 Pro, and there's an action-packed Final Battle trailer ready for your consumption if you fancy it. Let's hope you haven't been spoiled by pesky leaks, though.
