Diablo has always utilised elements from MMOs, but has never fully committed to being one, so is Diablo 4 the same, or has it fully embraced the genre?
Is Diablo 4 an MMO?
Back in June of 2020, during the development of Diablo 4, the director, Luis Barriga, spoke about this very subject in an online blog post.

He went on to say ‘Our goal has always been to incorporate elements from shared world games without the game ever feeling like it’s veering into massively multiplayer territory. To be clear, this is a philosophy rather than a tech limitation.’Â

So the answer to this is no, despite adopting some of the features we have come to expect from MMOs Diablo 4 is not one. The reason for this appears to be that the developers don’t want what Diablo once was to be lost in something else.
