With the popular Blizzard franchise having long been a part of the ARPG scene, many have been following its gripping plot since the beginning. However, a large portion of the player base is still seemingly confused as they are now wondering whether the latest series installment is a prequel to past in-game events.

Luckily, we’re here to help you understand its timeline by answering this exact question below.

Does Diablo 4 take place before Diablo 3?

No, Diablo 4 is not a prequel as its plot takes place 30 years after the events of Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls. During the decades that followed after the near-destruction of Sanctuary, cultists were able to summon Lilith, the daughter of Mephisto, to bring about destruction to the world once again.

Players are naturally tasked with stopping this supernatural force from bringing about the obliteration of Sanctuary as they chase her across the in-game world. Numerous announcement trailers ahead of the release have already shown the protagonists against Lilith and her evil forces. With this in mind, we can probably expect a climatic fight with her at some point in the future.

Though the entire plot is yet to be revealed by the developers, we can expect it to progress across the game’s initial launch and the DLCs that follow afterwards. Unfortunately, the dates for the expansions have not been disclosed yet since the game hasn’t been launched.

Hopefully though, Blizzard can fix all of the issues that are currently plaguing it before it’s made available so players can enjoy the game’s plot seamlessly.
