A new countdown timer has appeared on the official Duke Nukem website.

Furthermore a new Twitter account – @DukeNukemGame – appears to have surfaced online yesterday. It has already been followed by the IP’s owner Gearbox, suggesting it could be official.

While there aren’t any hints as to what it could be, the timer seems to be counting down to 1:30am BST next Saturday, September 3, and is joined by a banner wishing Duke a “Happy 20th Anniversary”. The original Duke Nukem launched in 1991, although the more popular Duke Nukem 3D arrived in January 1996.

So why is Gearbox celebrating now? Well, we could be due an announcement at PAX West, where the developer will be hosting a panel that promises to have “never-before-seen reveals, exclusives, and surprises”.

The latest Duke Nukem, Duke Nukem Forever, launched on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in 2011. It wasn’t very good.

Still, would you like to see a new one? Let us know in the comments.
