A petition set up in an attempt to raise awareness of the fact that there are no playable female characters in Aliens: Colonial Marines multiplayer has surpassed its goal.

A figure of 1000 signatures was set as the petition’s goal, and at the time of writing 1798 people have signed up.

The furore over Aliens: Colonial Marines multiplayer started when Gearbox producer Brian Burleson confirmed that gamers wouldn’t be able to play as female marines in the game’s multiplayer mode.

The petition stated: “What we want is the ability to create a custom female to represent ourselves just like the men can, in multiplayer/co-op in order for us to ‘become a Colonial Marine’ as well as accurately represent the other half of the United States Colonial Marine Corps!”

Neither SEGA nor Gearbox have responded to the petition.
