After months of dealing with online trolls, the Helldivers 2 community has banded together to protect Super Earth. Following troll lobby leaders kicking players and generally nasty online behaviour, players of the brilliant PvE game have had enough.
Popular Helldivers account Helldivers Media released a statement to followers aiming to protect the game’s core playerbase. With a now-stable player count, the Twitter account blasted the rise of hate groups online trying to ruin the game.
Helldivers 2 fans vs Online Trolls
In a statement released to fans, Helldivers 2 Media ordered fans to “take stock” and recognise where the fanbase is at.
“The emergence of organised trolls is a sign,” they continued. “Trolls only appear when there is something special to sully. Something rare to besmirch.”
Other fans have responded in support of banging together against trolls blasting the game online. While there are issues with balancing—some of which were addressed in the latest update—the game is still one of the most fun shooters on the market.
“Ignore whiners, embrace death, achieve victory. Haven’t played another shooter since launch. Don’t feel compelled to,” one player explained.
“Absolutely true. So many players bought this game and then apparently, found out after months that they failed to understand what they bought,” said another. “Helldivers are not the heroes of the story, they are the unknown soldiers who fight and die without a name on the battlefield.”
Is Helldivers in trouble?
After hitting an all-time peak of 458,000 players on PC alone, Helldivers 2 player numbers are now below 30,000 peak a day. However, this doesn’t mean that the game is failing, especially as developer Arrowhead Game Studios is still working on the game.
While games like Counter-Strike 2 see almost a million concurrent players a day, that’s very much an outlier. With a PS5 audience as well, Helldivers 2 is still a popular shooter, it’s just not a Call of Duty, and that’s fine.
