Helldivers 2 flag-raising missions don’t feel patriotic enough for Super Earth

In the tutorial for Helldivers 2, you’re taught how to properly secure land for the glory of Super Earth. Grabbing the flag firmly with your hands, you shove the flag deep into the ground, marking it with the symbol of democracy for all to see.

However, despite this tutorial, Helldivers 2 flag-raising missions don’t have this mechanic. Instead, you simply wait as the beautiful flag of our glorious planet slowly raises from a spot on the ground. This isn’t patriotic enough.

Helldivers 2 flag missions need to be more patriotic

Sure, blasting your way through maps with the best weapons and stratagems to get to the Super Earth flag is fun, but where is the glory in that? Instead, planting the flag of Super Earth should be done as the tutorial deems feet: walking with the flag to the highest point and stuffing it deep into the ground so the insect and automaton scum can see it from miles afar.

On Reddit, fans explain that they would love missions where they have to carry the flag of Super Earth across dangerous lands, and even use it as a weapon for dishing out democracy with force.

“Instead of defending a slowly raising flag, you should have to carry the flag and fight your way to a location to plant it,” one player said. “Similar to how you have to carry hard drives, you’d pick the flag up at a location and carry it to a hill or something that needs to be captured, fighting off enemies along the way (the flag bearer would have an arm free to defend themselves).”

“I agree, honestly that’s how I expected this mission to go after finishing the tutorial for the first time,” said another. “Also, I don’t like standing around, waiting for a timer to fill up, and your idea sounds like it would be epic.”

This is how Helldivers are taught to use the flag, so why don’t missions follow this structure?

Sticking with the lore

As players pitched the changed Helldivers 2 mode, they also made sure it stuck with the game’s lore. With Super Earth’s stringent budget, players would have to pick up a flag from a deceased Helldiver somewhere on the planet as the government won’t spend anything to send in a new flag.

Whatever the case, Helldivers’ tutorial does leave players expecting to carry flags to their destination instead of waiting for them to raise. If anything, it would be a fun additional objective to add a tiny bit of extra variety to the game, and it could add a bigger challenge as fans wait for a new difficulty mode.
