Helldivers 2 is in a strange state right now. It has a community backing it and cheering it on to succeed, but the developers seem to keep dropping the ball at every turn and there is only so long before the player base gives up and moves on. Arrowhead Game Studios is at a crucial point and the next few months could put the game on the right path, and I really hope that will be the case.

The Helldivers 2 Community Twinbeard took to the official Discord server to answer questions from the community. In particular, Twinbeard spoke about the planned 60-day roadmap that Arrowhead Game Studios has laid out to rectify many of the issues from the Escalation of Freedom update, as well as improve the game and fix longstanding issues.

A Helldivers 2 player known as mich iel asked Twinbeard about the current state of the 60-day plan while expressing their concern that this is a do-or-die situation for Arrowhead. “While I have faith in the 60-day plan. I do hope you guys know it puts you guys in a tight spot to deliver. I don’t know how failure will be received next time but it can’t be anything good,” they said.

“I’m saying this as someone who supports Arrowhead but has been becoming more and more frustrated with the route this game has decided to take. I just hope Arrowhead is taking significant measures to answer the recent community outcries regarding nerfs and bugs seriously and not empty promises.” They then wrapped up the comment by saying that they “really don’t want this game to fail any further,” while stating “I don’t know what made AH take this drastic turn for the worst.”

Twinbeard responded to mich iel by saying “We do know about the need to deliver and I fully agree, that a lack of information or changes will make sentiment worse. I’m not at liberty to reveal all the details surrounding the 60-day plan, but we’re rolling out more information in portions starting the following weeks.”

Another Helldivers 2 player, Lucifish, pointed out that it has now been close to 15 days since the announcement of the roadmap, which should put it as being at least a quarter of the way complete. However, we have seen very little from Arrowhead to suggest that they have begun to fix the game.

“We’re almost a quarter of the way into the 60 days, and we’ve seen no changes addressing any of the core problems. We’ve also not seen any verbal confirmation on any specific balance reversions.
The 60-day plan was kind of vague, and we’ve still not seen any declarations of actual, concrete changes that are on their way, I’m just a little worried, and I think I’m not the only one.”

Twinbeard responded by admitting that the plan was vague and was finalized saying,

“The announcement of the 60-day plan was indeed somewhat vague – likely to not overpromise and not having finalized the plan or having everyone back from summer vacation. That being said, we will roll out more information in several portions starting the following two weeks, so more is coming.”

Finally, Twinbeard would respond to a comment from Thomas who stated that the community distrust is only going to continue to grow if Arrowhead doesn’t begin to address the issues and be more forthcoming with the community.

“I think as time goes on, discontent is only going to get worse if Arrowhead remains tight-lipped about this “60-day plan,” they said. “Player trust was broken almost completely with Escalation of Freedom. While I understand the “head down, get to it” mindset about working/improving things, the circumstances surrounding this game and how we got here are very different. People need to see progress, even if it’s before they get to enjoy it.”

Twinbeard responded by stating “We’re starting to roll out more information in the coming weeks. I can’t turn back the clock, what we can do is try to deliver better going forward, and right now we’re planning and prepping various pieces of content to release during the following six weeks or so. More information is coming.”

Whatever Arrowhead Game Studios has in store, the future of Helldivers 2 rests on the next few months being a success. If the game isn’t in a good state by the end of 2024, its long-term survival could be in jeopardy, especially with heavy-hitting titles such as GTA 6 right around the corner and hundreds of new live-service games in active development. Only time will tell as to whether the developers can pull this off, and I hope they can, although I think many of us are understandably incredibly skeptical at the minute.
