Haunted Chocolatier creator Eric Barone has offered some insight into how the game will differ from his previous hit, Stardew Valley.

Barone opened up his latest blog thanking fans for their response to the follow-up’s announcement last month. He then went on to describe how the new game will have a greater focus on combat. “You can rest assured that I’m not ‘copying and pasting’ Stardew’s combat,” he said. “On the contrary, almost everything in Haunted Chocolatier, including the combat, is completely coded (and drawn) from scratch.”

To that end, one of the new additions in the game will be shields. They’ll allow you to block most attacks, and doing so successfully also has a chance to stun the attacker. “The shield/stun mechanic rewards more cautious, patient players who wait for a window of opportunity,” Barone elaborates. “But you don’t have to play like this, you could just as well charge in aggressively, and if you can pull it off, you’ll defeat enemies more quickly that way.”

For the time being, Barone is keeping some of these other combat styles close to his chest. Just as with Stardew Valley, he intends that most of the game’s nuances will be discovered by players. However, he also won’t be drawn on a release window for the game yet and even warns it may never see the light of day.

However, he reassures fans that everything is looking good, and he has “100% faith” that it will see a release. Hopefully then it won’t be too long before we can tell you whenever Haunted Chocolatier is set to arrive.
