Tom Clancy’s The Division has come under fire for having better graphics at E3 2013 than it supposedly does now, on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Our reporter has painstakingly researched the visuals of the Tom Clancy franchise to find the truth – is The Division really a downgrade, or are people being silly? Considering previous graphics controversies surrounding Ubisoft’s other titles such as Watch_Dogs and Assassin’s Creed: Unity, it’s a fair question.

For our money, the game looks great. An expansive, online game world that 1:1 represents New York City is no easy thing to pull off, but Ubisoft have managed to do it to great effect in this RPG shooter. That doesn’t mean people aren’t right to be upset, though – pre-release hype is advertising, and it should be as representative of the final product as possible. That’s not a straightforward thing in the world of videogames, where target renders and proof of concepts can be released before the realities of development scale features back. There is a question of practicality tied to the genuine consumer concerns, and it seems almost inevitable that they will clash.
