Xbox’s newly rebranded Halo Studios is hard at work on multiple new projects in the flagship video game franchise, as well as new updates for the free-to-play game Halo Infinite. However, fans are still hoping for new updates for the decade-old Master Chief Collection with many hoping for mod support on Xbox.
In an interview with VideoGamer, Halo community manager and overseer of Infinite operations John Junyszek explained that the team may be able to bring mod support for MCC on Xbox, but it’s very unlikely.
“Never say Never”, says Halo Studios
In the past year, Master Chief Collection modding has exploded on PC. Alongside hilarious mods adding pirate adventures to Halo 3, fans and Halo Studios worked together to release the infamous Halo 2 E3 demo for fans to play for the first time.
As an immensely famous piece of “lost content”, fans of the series on Xbox consoles have been begging for mod support. Speaking to VideoGamer, Junyszek confirmed that it is a huge task for the team that they can’t commit to right now, but it may be possible in the future.
“We’re excited to have helped the Digsite crew bring the famed Halo 2 E3 demo to MCC via Steam Workshop,” Junyszek told VideoGamer. “Being able to actually play this demo has long been a Halo fans dream, and this is only possible now thanks to the dedication and passion of members of the Halo modding community. While we’ll never say never, bringing modded content to Xbox is far less trivial than utilizing Steam Workshop and thus is currently out of scope for what we can support today.”
To allow mods on Xbox, Halo Studios would need to create their own frontend or develop some form of Mod.IO connectivity for the Master Chief Collection. With the studio now spread across Infinite and multiple new projects for Xbox Series and PC, the development of mod support on Xbox One and Xbox Series may be too much.
However, there is hope that, one day, mods can come to MCC on Xbox. We certainly hope so.
