Microsoft’s live action web series, Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, has cost the firm in the region of $5 million to $10 million, insiders have told LA Times.

The five part series will debut in October, with subsequent parts being released in the run up to the November 6 launch of Halo 4. These five episodes will then be collated and bolstered with an additional 15 minutes of footage to create a 90 minute feature.

“We want this piece to do all the things that a game, by virtue of being a game, can’t,” said producer Lydia Antonini. “When you have real people, you can have real stakes and make connections.”

And although billed as a web series, Microsoft has attracted some real Hollywood talent, including Daniel Cudmore, who played Colossus in two X-Men movies, as Master Chief.

Australian actor Tom Green stars as a young UNSC cadet inspired by Master Chief who goes on to become a leader on the UNSC Infinity Spacecraft.

Helming the production is Sorority Row director Steward Hendler.
