Grand Theft Auto 6 will be the biggest game of the generation, but rumoured GTA 6 Xbox resolution is already causing heated debates.

Despite the GTA 6 release date still being unconfirmed, rumours surrounding the game’s Xbox Series S version aren’t going down well. With Microsoft‘s lower-power console already receiving rougher visuals than other machines, some players are worried for GTA 6 on the device.

GTA 6 Xbox resolution woes

In a recent video by gaming analyst group Digital Foundry, it was predicted that GTA 6 will run at just 720p on Xbox Series S.

Due to the console’s lower specs, and GTA 6’s intense technical makeup, the lower power machine may run at a low resolution. However, the console could use FSR reconstruction to output at a higher pixel count.

“We can assume 720p target for the Series S,” said Digital Foundry’s John Linneman.

Why is GTA 6 so low res?

According to Digital Foundry, GTA 6’s low Xbox resolution would be due to the game’s reliance on ray-tracing. Rockstar already added ray-tracing to GTA V on Xbox Series consoles, but GTA 6 aims to go much higher.

GTA 6 could run at a higher resolution on Xbox without ray-tracing, but Digital Foundry explains the game was made with the technology in mind.

“If they’re going this hard on these Ray-Tracing effects, they can’t just rip them out either,” the group said. “You can’t just say ‘oh, I’m going to turn this off’ — you need a fallback, you’ll need to art it in the right way for the fallback to look good. So this is one of those cases where they’re going to have to make it work. So, we’ll see what that means.”

Fans aren’t happy

Despite the game’s cross-platform nature, the news of a potential low GTA 6 Xbox resolution has ignited a fire in the gaming community. Many claim the smaller console is holding back the industry, ruining the next generation of gaming.

“I’m not trying to offend anyone who has the Series S, but that console is holding back so many games,” one gamer said. “It never should have been made.”

“I kinda hate the idea that supporting this dumb console means precious time lost on actually optimizing for next gen potential, just for making it ‘run’ at all on this potato,” said another. “Such a waste of time and resources.”

While a GTA 6 PC release isn’t coming yet, Rockstar’s open-world adventure will come to the platform eventually. With this in mind, the next GTA is likely being made with scalability in mind, and aiming for Series S as a platform is helping in that regard.

Nevertheless, GTA 6 could run at a low resolution on Series S. However, the vast majority of people who own the smaller machine likely won’t care about that at all. They’ll just be happy to play GTA 6.
