Almost everyone is looking forward to the release of GTA 6 next year. It is projected to be the biggest video game launch of all time, and there are numerous mouth-watering official details along with exciting rumors regarding custom music stations as well as over 700-enterable stores and more. While the new Grand Theft Auto will be massive when it finally releases, the CEO of Twitch has said that GTA 6’s “strange” launch will keep GTA 5 popular, at least on the streaming platform.

Twitch CEO believes GTA 5 will continue to thrive after GTA 6 release

The Game Business recently conducted an interview with Twitch CEO, Dan Clancy. The interview discussed a range of topics such as the platform’s profitability, how it is anti-TikTok, and other relevant matters. There was also a brief discussion regarding the popularity of Grand Theft Auto.

According to The Game Business, GTA 5 was the most popular game streamed on Twitch throughout the entirety of 2024. During last year, there were reportedly 1.4 billion hours spent watching GTA 5 content. This beat League of Legends’ 1.19 billion hours, Valorant’s 804 million, Fortnite’s 539 million, and Call of Duty’s 401 million.

Regarding the upcoming launch of GTA 6, Dan Clancy said he believes “GTA 5 will still be popular”. This is because GTA 6 will not release on PC at launch as it is only scheduled for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on May 26th, 2026.

Clancy said, “It is going to be a little strange because whenever it [GTA 6] does come out, it’s coming out on the console and role play will not be part of the initial launch, and so GTA 5 will still be popular on Twitch, even as everyone’s playing GTA 6 for a while”.

The Grand Theft Auto 5 roleplaying community is exclusive to PC and is massive. It’s unfortunately something that cannot be replicated on consoles as a lot of the popularity stems from custom servers with unique features added. Even just the base GTA 5 campaign and online remains massively popular on PC as nearly 10-years later it still has a daily peak concurrent player-count of almost 100,000, as per Steam Charts.

While the Twitch CEO is right that a lot of players will continue playing GTA 5 due to Jason and Lucia not being available on PC at launch, it will be difficult for Grand Theft Auto’s fifth installment to remain the most popular game on Twitch. There will be the continuation of GTA 5 streams, but there will also be plenty of people streaming the GTA 6 campaign as well as Online from console.

GTA 6 will eventually come to PC, but we unfortunately don’t know when. GTA 5 originally landed on PS3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013 before arriving on PS4 and Xbox One in November 2014. It wasn’t until April 2015 it finally came out on PC. As for Rockstar’s most recent game, Red Dead Redemption 2, it released on PS4 and Xbox One in October 2018 and eventually joined PC in November 2019. Hopefully GTA 6 will join PC as quick as Red Dead Redemption 2 rather than Grand Theft Auto 5.

In other Grand Theft Auto 6 news, Take Two’s CEO has reassured fans worried about another delay, saying that when Rockstar “set a specific date, that ends up being the date”.
