Grand Theft Auto 5 has become PlayStation Network’s “biggest ever digital release”, outselling previous record holder The Last of Us.

Sony announced the news on PlayStation Blog, revealing that GTA 5 was September’s “runaway success” landing at the digital top spot ahead of FIFA 14 and GTA 4.

“The runaway success story for September should come as a surprise to no one,” said SCEE blog manager Fred Dutton. “Grand Theft Auto 5 dominated the PS3 chart, breaking The Last of Us’ record to become the biggest ever digital release on the platform.”

Despite its success, however, exact download numbers have yet to be revealed.

It was announced earlier today that GTA 5 had already sold more copies in the UK than GTA 4 managed throughout its entire lifetime. But despite recording extraordinary week one sales, the game has struggled to keep up in the UK retail charts since, dropping to no.2 behind EA Sports’ FIFA 14.
